Dr. Fleetwood Maddox is a board-certified ophthalmologist. Now retired, Dr. Maddox practiced for over 35 years at the Eye Center, specializing in pediatric ophthalmology.
Dr. Maddox was born in Macon and graduated from Mercer University with his undergraduate degree. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. His internship and residency were completed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA, where he served as Staff Ophthalmologist from 1961 to 1962. He then served as Staff Ophthalmologist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Annapolis, MD from 1962 to 1964. In 1965, Dr. Maddox completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Maddox has served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Surgery at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon. He is the Ophthalmologist Advisor to the Knight's Templar Eye Foundation, Inc. In 1997, Dr. Fleetwood Maddox was awarded both the American Academy of Ophthalmology Humanitarian Award as well as the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology L.E. Brown Humanitarian Award.
He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Society, Bibb County Medical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, Georgia Society of Ophthalmology (past president), American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (founding member) and International Strabismological Association.
For the past twelve years, Dr. Maddox has participated in medical mission work by providing diagnostic and surgical ophthalmic care to needy patients living in the St. Ann's Bay area of Jamaica. "I'm happy to be able to help in this program," says Dr. Maddox. "We're fortunate in our country to have access to the best in medical care. As a physician, I believe that it's important to extend our knowledge and abilities to those who are not so lucky. Having this opportunity to share in their treatment has been a blessing to me."
Now that he is retired, Dr. Maddox finds time for travel, hunting, and family activities. He and his wife Katie enjoy visiting with their 10 grandchildren.
