Are You a Candidate?

LASIK is a medical procedure that requires specific physical and medical conditions be met before it can be considered ‘right’ for any patient. A reputable surgeon will on average reject around 20% of applicants for LASIK, however most people over age 18 who suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism can be helped.

The thickness of your cornea, the health of your eye, the amount of refractive error, and the effects of aging all play a part in determining whether your eyes are well-suited for LASIK. Here at the Eye Center of Central Georgia we provide a full range of alternatives to LASIK in case LASIK is not the best vision correction procedure for your eyes.

What Happens At The Free Consultation?

First you will meet with one of our Refractive Counselors who will generally discuss your vision correction options, your financing options, the technology we use and answer any questions you may have.

Next step is to have a full pre-operative exam with one of our physicians, which includes:

  • Taking a complete medical history of your eyes and eye health.
  • Corneal topography exam. A corneal topography exam maps the contour and shape of your cornea to determine your cornea’s condition.
  • The next step is to determine your overall eye health by taking a Retinal Scan.
  • Wavefront diagnostics to provide a detailed three-dimensional diagram, or map, of your entire optical system, like a 'fingerprint of your vision'.

This data is important to determine if you're a good candidate for laser eye surgery and to personalize your treatment. In some cases, the Wavefront diagnosis indicates that LASIK surgery is not advisable at all. No one should consider laser eye surgery without first having a Custom Wavefront diagnostic test.

  • Pupilometer exam to allow us to measure pupil size in dim and bright light. Accurate measurements of your pupil along with a custom surgery plan will significantly reduce chance of halos and glare associated with night driving.
  • Finally, a slit lamp exam to additionally diagnose and monitor the health of your eyes, both inside and out.

After these tests, you will have a personal consultation to go over the results and discuss any quality of life issues with regards to LASIK.

The entire Consultation process takes about 60 minutes and by the end of it you will be ready to make an informed decision about your vision.
